EDITORIAL DESIGN:
Editorial Brief at University of Portsmouth (2019/20)
BRIEF:
For this brief, we were tasked with designing a black and white editorial piece based around a chosen manifesto. The two choices were the Dada movement manifesto, and the Futurism manifesto. I decided to design one around Futurism, as the imagery and themes stood out more to me and I felt I could create a better piece of design by choosing this manifesto. Using both type and illustration, I designed this editorial piece to represent the themes of Futurism that are present in the manifesto itself.
EXPLANATION:
For the illustrations of this piece, I decided to go with the theme of war since this was an area that the manifesto spoke of, and glorified. It also spoke about the power of machinery, so to incorporate both these ideologies I used the illustrations I designed of a gun being deconstructed and reconstructed. For the front cover I used the image of the gun I illustrated to give the viewer an idea of the general aesthetic of the publication before viewing it as well as adding some text to the cover. For the cover, we were allowed to use colour and I chose to screen-print my design with red ink, with the red symbolising the violence and blood that war brings. I also designed the illustrations with the art that came of the Futurism movement in mind with the angular illustrations.
